Marie Osmond will be the keynote speaker at the 23rd Central California Women's Conference on Sept. 14 at the Fresno Convention Center. This year's theme is "Live What Matters 2U."

Conference coordinator Mary Stabelfeld says Osmond was a natural choice because she's accomplished in so many different areas: entertainment, business and charity work. She co-founded the Children's Miracle Network, which provides health care to more than 17 million children.

Jan Edwards, conference development director, says a key reason Osmond agreed to speak is because the purpose of the Central California Women's Conference is to enrich the lives of women.

"Our conference gives back thousands of dollars each year to Valley women and children in need," Edwards says in a news release.

Osmond will speak about her very public life, which recently included a weight battle and the suicide of her son, Michael Blosil, and her personal values that keep her moving forward.

More than 3,500 people are expected to attend the conference. Organizers expect a sellout. Tickets are available for $90 at ccwc-fresno.org.

Admission includes continental breakfast, seminars, keynote-speaker luncheon and afternoon reception. For more information call (559) 265-6888.

Fresnobee.com will launch a new story-comment system on Thursday, Sept. 9. The system, called Disqus, will allow readers to:

  • Log in using online identities from fresnobee.com, Facebook, Twitter or Disqus.
  • Share comments on Facebook
  • Comment on a story or reply to another comment (these are known as "threaded" discussions).
  • Sort comments by rating or popularity, as well as by time posted.
  • Subscribe to comments by email or RSS.

We think the new system is a big step up. Unfortunately, there are a couple of minor annoyances:

  • Readers who want to use an avatar will have to upload one to Facebook, Twitter or Disqus and comment using those accounts. Sorry about that!
  • Comments made on the old system will disappear 24 hours after Disqus goes live.

You can read more about the upcoming change by visiting our Disqus FAQ page.
